This 2nd grade curriculum was developed for presentation over two 35-minute sessions and is intended to be conducted with a group of approximately 25 to 30 children. The content and delivery is based on findings from several areas of research, including child development, learning styles, and child abuse and neglect prevention. It is intended to encourage broad participation among the children by engaging them in visual, auditory, and physical learning. Physical learning is the primary learning style at this age. At the same time, the curriculum was developed with an acknowledgement of and sensitivity to the unique role of an outside facilitator in a classroom setting. The curriculum development process included obtaining feedback from a diverse group of parents and caregivers of second graders, as well as elementary educators, and social workers. One goal while developing curriculum for children this age is to honor the parent/caregiver as the primary teacher in a child's life. Parents of children this age have particular sensitivity around discussions of this nature.
Activities here reinforce the concepts learned. Letters are sent home to parents after each session regarding concepts that their children have learned in the Speak Up Be Safe program. These letters include information about child abuse and ways to keep children safe. Worksheets are also available to parents to complete at home with children.
